Language Learning Increases Cognitive Function
London language school UIC Languages is calling for a greater awareness of the cognitive benefits of language learning.

UK (ePressReleases.org) Jun 4, 2012 - of the importance of multilingualism, a UIC Languages spokesperson said: "The ability to study something perhaps seen as difficult is good in itself. It is also one subject which helps you communicate".
The cognitive improvements that come with learning a language have been well documented. According to the University of Pennsylvania, there is evidence that well-developed bilingualism actually enhances one's cognitive flexibility.
Bilingual adults and children are better able to discriminate between the sounds of a language. They also mature earlier in their ability to talk and think about language - an ability known as linguistic abstraction.
Research published in the journal 'Science' states that children who are raised bilingually develop specific types of cognitive benefit during infancy. It also reveals that bilingualism can help protect against symptoms of dementia in older people.
