For hardware, there is a range of thermal printers available. Desktop printers are more suitable for environments where they will be used infrequently, while industrial quality printers can produce labels at a higher specification, while being sturdier to withstand busy environments.
When choosing a printer, South East Labels advise their customers to consider their needs within their workplace. The main question to ask is how many labels a day will be printed. This will determine whether the client will need a desktop or an industrial thermal printer. Desktop printers are better for smaller runs of labels, usually in smaller sizes. Industrial printers can handle more frequent runs of over 1000 labels per day.
The client will also need to consider the size of the finished labels. Desktop printers will usually print a smaller sized label. If large sized labels are needed frequently then an industrial printer will be required. 'Wide web printers' are available for very large labels, such as drum labels.
There are two main types of thermal printers - Thermal Direct and Thermal Transfer. Thermal Transfer printers use a ribbon, while Thermal Direct printers do not. This is important when considering label materials, as the two printers cannot use the same materials.
Once the client has chosen their ideal printer, label software will need to be purchased. LabelDirect is a program developed by Windows which offers a fully professional labelling package, including serial numbers, copy fitting, barcodes and database integration. Designed for use with a whole range of printers, the software can be used on any port or across a network for ease of use within an office environment.
LabelDirect also offers flexible editing tools with many easy-to-use options available. Master editing can also be completed on one computer, with up to five others able to access the files. This makes it easy for print-only users to choose the correct template when printing.
As well as LabelDirect, BarTender offers an equally sophisticated software package. Printer manufacturers such as Toshiba also offer their own custom software programmes.
