Projects Abroad Invites Volunteers To Go Wild

UK (ePressReleases.org) Jul 27 , 2012 - It has been providing fulfilling and exciting opportunities that enable volunteers to live and work in countries all over the world for more than 20 years.
Volunteers are sent to projects that match their interests and aspirations and allow them to learn about different cultures, to get real-world experience and to make a real difference to the lives of others and the environment.
For its latest conservation project it is inviting volunteers to go wild by living on a wildlife reserve in Kenya and helping to protect one of the world's most endangered subspecies of giraffe.
Kenya's Kigio Wildlife Reserve is situated just two hours north of Nairobi but volunteers will feel a world away from the bustle of the city. The sprawling reserve was once a cattle ranch but it is now a haven and breeding ground for an incredibly wide range of wild animals that feed on its diverse range of habitats - from riverside woodlands to short grasslands, shrub and acacia trees - which stretch as far as the eye can see.
Buffalo, zebra, waterbuck, impala, gazelle, eland, hyenas, leopards, hippo and 200 different species of birds can all be found within this beautiful reserve. It is also home to a highly significant proportion of one of the world's most endangered subspecies of giraffes. There are only 450 known Rothschild giraffes left living in the wild and 10% of them live at the Kigio Wildlife Reserve.
Volunteers will live on the reserve at close quarters with the animals. They will be involved in numerous tasks all of which have the same aim of conserving the wildlife, protecting the ecosystems and sharing the knowledge about the diversity of the area with the local community. The work will be carried out in the wild, in an incredible location and with the skilled and experienced supervision of local staff.
There is still an urgent need to learn more about this rare subspecies of giraffe and volunteers will help to carry out this by monitoring and recording their daily lives. Rothschild giraffes are exceptionally tall and can be distinguished from other giraffes easily. There are five 'horns' on their heads, where other giraffes have just two. Rothschild giraffes are also distinctly coloured and their lack of lower leg 'markings' can make them appear to be wearing knee-high white socks.
